Forks' defense perfectly Devilish in semifinal
win

ROCHESTER ? In the face of an opponent that had permitted 37
points this season and no more than 12 in a game since
opening day, Chenango Forks put up 13 ? in the first 41/2
minutes!
So it went Saturday at Sahlen's Stadium, where the Blue
Devils grabbed a Blue Ribbon-worthy 27-0 victory over
previously undefeated, second-ranked Maple Grove/Chautauqua
Lake in a Class C state football semifinal.
It was Forks at its defensive finest, coupling sound
game-planning with exquisite execution to quell a squad that
featured a 2,100-yard running back and which rolled into
Week 12 on a 39.9-per-game average.
Ah, but these Thunder Dragons had not bumped into the likes
of top-ranked, defending state champion Chenango Forks,
which was fresh off its best showing of the year. That
brought a 57-14 battering of Utica Notre Dame in the
quarterfinal round.
But Saturday? Against an opponent the quality of Maple
Grove/Chautauqua Lake?
Next-level, to be sure.
Remaining for Forks (11-1) is a title-game matchup with
Section 2 champion Hoosick Falls (12-0), which dispatched
Millbrook in its semifinal 29-0. That is scheduled for a 3
p.m. kickoff Saturday in the Carrier Dome.
Forks required a mere four snaps of the football to put
points on the scoreboard. And then, thanks to one of myriad
defensive contributions on the day, just one more to make it
a two-touchdown difference.
When time expired, the Blue Devils had intercepted four
passes, recovered two fumbles and turned in a pile of
less-glitzy, equally meaningful defending to bring the
program an eighth title-game berth.
"The more we studied this team, we knew that this was a
very, very good program, a very good team," Blue Devils
coach David Hogan said. "We couldn't have asked more of our
kids, especially on defense."
Staked to a 6-0 lead by virtue of sophomore L.J. Watson's
61-yard, between-the-tackles rush for a touchdown on the
fourth-play from scrimmage ? a stunner to a MG/CL defense
unaccustomed to surrendering much of anything ? Forks'
defense went to work.
The Devils were hit up for two first downs on MG/CL's first
three offensive plays, but on the sixth linebacker Hunter
Luybli intercepted a pass and returned 41 yards to the
T-Dragons' 25-yard line. On the next snap, quarterback Jack
Sherwood sent a short pass to his left that Ryan Bronson
received at the 20-yard line and took the distance through
traffic for a score.
Tony Silvanic added the PAT and it was 13-0.
On the second play of MG/CL's next possession, the Devils
recovered a fumble.
Thereafter through conclusion of the first half, Forks
forced three punts and denied Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake
passage beyond the Blue Devils' 46-yard line.
The champions from Section 6 mounted a drive that advanced
the football 33 yards on nine plays to open the third
quarter. But on a fourth-and-4 play from the 28, Bronson
picked off a pass to end that threat.
The Devils caught a significant break ? and capitalized ? on
what appeared an ill-advised decision by A.J. Hulton. From
punt formation at his team's 28-yard line, Hulton drifted to
his right in search of an opening to either run or punt. But
in charged Tony Silvanic to make a tackle for a 12-yard loss
and set up Forks 16 yards from the goal line.
A 12-yard rush by Cody Lamond came on first down, and three
plays later Watson carried inside from the 3 for a TD.
Silvanic's kick stretched the lead to 20-0 with 33.8 seconds
to play in the third quarter.
In search of some productivity through the air, MG/CL
inserted reserve quarterback Michael Welsh, whose first pass
of the afternoon went for a 15-yard gain to Jed Micek to the
Devils' 42 on the opening play of the final quarter.
But the junior's second attempt was intercepted by Luybli.
Forks' final interception was turned in by Dylan Studer who,
on a first-and-10 play from the Devils' 23-yard line,
secured the football at his 18-yard line and zoomed 82 yards
along the sideline for a score with 6:25 to play that wiped
away what tiny hope remained for a Maple Grove/Chautauqua
Lake comeback.
To solidify Forks' first shutout of the year, Luybli crashed
in for a tackle that created a fumble at the Devils' 1-yard
line in the final minute.
Asked which was the more impressive number on the scoreboard
? 27 or zero ? Luybli said, "The zero, by far."
Watson's take? "I'll go with the zero, because without our
defense playing the way it did today we wouldn't be where we
are right now."
Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake running back Ryan Miller, who'd
gone for 2,163 yards and 32 TDs against opponents from
schools other than Chenango Forks, logged 103 on 28 carries
before leaving with an injury on the last play of the third
quarter.
Miller is a tough, determined runner and among the best
Forks has encountered this season. But the Devils never did
allow him to turn in a truly difference-making play.
"They've definitely got some size on defense and they're
fundamentally sound, they tackle very well," Miller said of
Forks' defenders.
"We said before the game, no big plays? and we didn't give
up any," Hogan said of the defense.
Watson closed with 72 rushing yards and another 16
receiving, though along the way aggravated an ankle ailment
that has lingered throughout the season. Sherwood's four
pass completions included three of 14 or more yards.
Hoosick Falls, a Rensselaer County squad that will enter the
final ranked second behind Forks, was a 48-21 winner over
Owego in the Carrier Dome to open the season.
Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake meets its match
Thunder Dragons blanked in semifinal
By Miguel Rodriguez | Buffalo News Sports
Reporter
ROCHESTER – It’s hard to say what number on the
scoreboard was more surprising Saturday – the 27 or the 0.
The fact Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake’s season
ended at the hands of the defending state Class C champions was
hard enough for the Thunder Dragons to digest at Sahlen’s
Stadium. The way it ended, though, was downright shocking to
star senior Ryan Miller, whose team had steamrolled everyone
until running into a squad similar to the Dragons, except with
more seasoning on this stage.
“That’s very surprising,” Miller said after
MG/CL’s 27-0 loss to Chenango Forks of Section IV. “Nothing was
going our way.”
L.J. Watson rushed for 137 yards on seven
carries and helped set the tone for the Blue Devils (11-1) on
the game’s fourth play – taking a handoff up the middle for a
61-yard touchdown.
Forks’ defense did the rest, forcing five
turnovers and holding Miller, who has rushed for more than 2,000
yards, to 95 on 26 carries as the Connolly Cup finalist had to
fight for every yard he earned before an estimated crowd of 500
on a cold, rainy day.
“That’s a great team,” Maple Grove/Chautauqua
Lake coach Curt Fischer said of Forks. “First half I think we
had four drives where we either started out first-and-15 or
second-and-13 or second-and-14. We didn’t make those mistakes
during the year. Chenango Forks has been here. ... Their
experience, it showed.”
Chenango Forks, the top-ranked team in the
state poll, will face II-Hoosick Falls for the state
championship at 3 p.m. Saturday at Syracuse University’s Carrier
Dome. Falls advanced with a 29-0 rout of IX-Millbrook in the
East semifinal in Kingston.
Maple Grove/CL had a chance to make a
defensive statement on the opening drive. But instead of forcing
a three-and-out with the Blue Devils facing third-and-11 at
their own 21, it allowed them to catch the momentum wave. Cody
Lamond gained 18 yards on a run around left end for the first
down. Then Watson scored on the next play, a 61-yard run on
which he ran over the only defender between him and the goal
line.
Forks made it 13-0 on Ryan Bronson’s 25-yard
TD catch off a Jack Sherwood pass with just 4 minutes, 25
seconds gone in the first quarter. That score was set up by
Hunter Luybli’s 41-yard interception return to MG/CL’s 25 to
thwart the Thunder Dragons’ first possession.
To Maple Grove/CL’s credit, this game could
have gotten ugly in a hurry, especially when the Blue Devils
recovered a MG/CL fumble at the latter’s 22 on the next drive.
But the Thunder Dragons forced a four-and-out.
Maple Grove tried to get back in it but kept
making mistakes that made it easier to be stopped.
“We just weren’t the same team today, a lot of
mental mistakes, dropping the ball all over the place,” said
Miller, who left late in the third quarter after taking a helmet
to a calf.
Forks scored once in the third and again in
the fourth quarter for the final margin.
A bad decision on a punt attempt led to an
extremely short field (16 yards) for Forks to travel for
Watson’s second TD run – a 3-yarder with 33 seconds left in the
third. Dylan Studer returned an interception 82 yards for the
Devils’ clinching touchdown with 6:25 left.
Luybli made a game-high 7.5 tackles and two
interceptions to lead Chenango Forks, while Bronson had 6.5
tackles and an interception.
Jonah Tanner led Maple Grove/CL with six
tackles and added 57 yards on eight rushes.
The season may not have ended in the fashion
the Thunder Dragons had envisioned, but they still consider it a
success.
That’s because they feel they proved merged
football programs work. After experiencing some growing pains
during an eight-win 2013 campaign that ended in the Class D
sectional final at the Ralph, Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake opened
its second season as a merged outfit in a higher classification
by winning 11 straight games, a regular-season division
championship and a Section VI title.
“They’ve had to fight through a lot for two
years,” Fischer said. “They were the guys who came together.
“There was a lot of strife that had happened
in the beginning and then everybody bought into it. These young
men, they set a standard. They came together, they worked their
butts off and they had a great year … and the most important
thing is I love them all.”
“The past two years we’ve done great things,”
Miller said. “Hopefully, it’s good things for the future. …
Everything except for this game was amazing.”
Thunder Dragons Hit End Of The Road
By Scott Kindberg
Jamestown Post-Journal
ROCHESTER - The awards ceremony underway Saturday afternoon,
Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake coach Curt Fischer stood with his
players near midfield at Sahlen's Stadium.
When his name was announced, Fischer broke rank and accepted a
handshake from Section VI football chairman Ken Stoldt. The men
exchanged a few words and, ultimately, they posed for an
obligatory photo.
But it was not the kind of postgame that Fischer was hoping for.
Not by any stretch.
But in the end, Chenango Forks of Section IV proved worthy of
its No. 1 ranking as the Blue Devils shut out the No. 2 Thunder
Dragons, 27-0, in the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association Class C semifinal.
L.J. Watson rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and
defending state champion Chenango Fork's defense forced four
turnovers and bottled up Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake's prolific
running attack to advance to the state title game for the second
year in a row.
"That's a great football program, a great team," Fischer said
after suffering his first loss of the season. " Chenango Forks
has been here and their experience showed, but I can't take
anything away from our team. They're a wonderful group of kids
that busted their butts against a great program."
It just wasn't enough.
For while the Thunder Dragons dominated for 11 games this season
with a strong offensive line, the brilliant running of senior
Ryan Miller (26 carries, 95 yards) and a stout defense, they
weren't nearly as successful against Chenango Forks and were,
surprisingly, kept out of the end zone.
Meanwhile, the Blue Devils (11-1) wasted little time finding
paydirt.
On the fourth play from scrimmage, Watson took a handoff, broke
free at the line of scrimmage and raced untouched for a 61-yard
touchdown run. Less than 90 seconds into the game, Maple
Grove/Chautauqua Lake trailed, 6-0.
It didn't take long for Chenango Forks to add to the lead as
linebacker Hunter Luybli, the defensive Most Valuable Player,
picked off an AJ Hulton pass, setting up the Blue Devils with a
first down at the Thunder Dragon's 25-yard line. On the very
next play, senior quarterback Jack Sherwood connected with
senior Ryan Bronson on touchdown pass and, when junior Tony
Silvanic booted the extra point, Chenango Forks led, 13-0, with
7:35 remaining in the first quarter.
As it turned out, that was more than enough points as Maple
Grove/Chautauqua Lake was unable to find the end zone for the
rest of the game.
Meanwhile, Watson added a 3-yard run in the third quarter and
senior defensive back Dylan Studer picked off junior quarterback
Mike Welsh's pass and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown
midway through the fourth quarter.
The Thunder Dragons' best chance to score was late in the game,
but they fumbled the ball at the Blue Devils' 1-yard line and
the shutout was preserved.
"I knew they were strong, but I didn't know they were that
strong," Fischer said. "They matched up strength with us, and
that's the first time that's happened all year. I knew they were
going to be awesome and there was no doubt about it.
"There's not a lot to it. They just come at you and say, 'Here
it is, stop it.'"
Miller had 95 yards on 26 carries before leaving the game with
an apparent leg injury late in the third quarter and,
unofficially, he finished the season with 2,263 yards on the
ground. Unlike his other games, however, he was unable to break
a long run.
Credit for that goes to the Chenango Forks' defense, led by
Luybli, who finished with 7 tackles and two interceptions.
Bronson also added a pick and had 6 tackles, while Watson had
five stops and a tackle for loss.
Seniors Trevor Micek and Jonah Tanner led Maple Grove/Chautauqua
Lake with six tackles apiece and junior Mitch Sandberg added
five.
For 18 seniors who were part of the merged team, it was their
last game in a Thunder Dragons' uniform.
"All the smiles these guys bring to practice everyday and all
the smiles they started with," said Fischer of what he'll
remember most. "Watching these guys grow together, I can't
replace that.
"These guys already have almost like a college start. Meeting
new guys, participating with new guys. I think it was an awesome
thing. These seniors set a precedent, no doubt about it."
Chenango Forks will now advance to the state title game at 3
p.m., next Saturday at the Carrier Dome against Section II's
Hoosick Falls.
NOTES: Tanner was the recipient of the sportsmanship award;
Trevor Micek earned the most valuable defensive player; and
Miller claimed the most valuable offensive player for Maple
Grove/Chautauqua Lake. ... Watson was Chenango Forks' most
valuable offensive player, while Luybli earned the most valuable
defensive honors.

For Forks sophomore Ehrets: Hey, it's a snap
Kevin Stevens, kstevens@pressconnects.com
Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- 10th-grader part of an offensive front that'll face a mighty challenge in state football semifinal.
- Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake has allowed 37 points in 11 games.
- Blue Devils' defense must deal with a 2,163-yard rusher who's scored 32 TDs.
To go with all those upperclassmen who've propelled Chenango Forks' surge deep into another November of football, a sophomore has played a vital role knee-deep in most all that makes the Blue Devils' offense tick.
In fact, he handles the football on every play ? only, sans the widespread and worthy recognition of a fellow 10th grader who does his thing via the rush, reception, interception and the like.
Ryan Ehrets is winding down a second season as starting center. Excluding two games this autumn he was forced to sit out with a knee ailment, he has distinguished himself as the latest in a line of high-quality athletes Forks has assigned to the middle of the line.
He stands 6 feet, 3 inches, weighs 220 pounds, looks and acts every bit the part of a football player from helmet to heels. Oh, and he's made it his business to absorb and regularly demonstrate the cerebral requirements of the position he mans.
"He's like the quarterback of our offensive line," Blue Devils coach David Hogan said. "He understands, when the defense lines up, what they are trying to do. He'll call out the calls that we need to make, but also he's pretty smart knowing which kid might have the most trouble recognizing what he's supposed to do and make sure that that kid gets the appropriate information.
"That, to me, is huge. That's pretty rare for a sophomore to pick up on that."
Forks' coaching staff wasn't certain back in the summer of 2013 that the big, raw freshman was indeed ready to step into such a crucial role in the offense. But they gave Ehrets a shot, closely eyeballed and evaluated and scrutinized his activity through preseason camp and into the early stages of the season.
"It was almost like we were waiting for him to screw up somehow, but that didn't happen," Hogan said.
At present, with noon Saturday kickoff against Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake for a state semifinal next up, the Devils have every confidence in the young man who sets every play in motion.
In fact, Hogan said, "When I want to know what's going on out there, I talk to Ryan. Because I know I'm getting it straight. Ordinarily, you talk to three kids you'll get three different answers. When you talk to Ryan it's pretty accurate most of the time."
Ehrets has contributed on the defensive front as well, but his primary responsibilities have focused on snapping the football to quarterback Jack Sherwood and clearing space for the quarterback, Ryan Bronson, fellow soph L.J. Watson and the rest.
Forks' offensive front figures to be tested mightily Saturday at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester by a defense Hogan sized up as, well, something highly familiar.
"They've got a couple of good stout tackles up front, they've got very strong linebackers and some very good team speed? sounds a lot like our defense," he said.
Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake's Section 6 champions defeated two-time defending Class D state champion Randolph 24-12 on opening weekend, and has not allowed any opponent a double-figure scoring output since. The Thunder Dragons have blanked three of their last four foes, winning those four games by an aggregate 135-7.
"It'll be the team that makes the fewest mistakes, without a doubt," Hogan said. "We have to take care of the football, sustain drives. If I had to predict, I don't think there's going to be a whole lot of scoring going on."

NYSPHSAA semifinals /Class C: MG/CL faces tough foe in team’s first final four

Who: Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake (11-0) vs. Chenango Forks Blue Devils (10-1).
When: noon, today.
Where: Sahlen’s Stadium, 460 Oak St., Rochester.
Tickets: $10.
Television: Time Warner Cable Sportsnet.
New York State Sportswriters Association Class C poll: Chenango Forks No. 1, MG/CL No. 2.
Where’s Chenango Forks? Nine miles north of Binghamton.
Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake in state semis: 0-0. As a merged program, this is the Thunder Dragons’ first final four. However, Maple Grove has a history in the state semifinals as it earned wins in 1998 (20-19 over III-Dolgeville) and 2008 (49-14 over IV-Walton) en route to state championships in Class D.
Chenango Forks in state semis: 7-3, with all 10 appearances in the last 13 years. The Blue Devils’ 11th state semifinal is by far the most of any program in the state. The defending state champions, Chenango Forks has lost in the state semifinals in 2006 (V-Geneva), 2009 (Southwestern) and 2012 (V-Hornell).
Coaches: MG/CL Curt Fischer, 24th season (190-41); Chenango Forks, Dave Hogan, sixth season (68-9).
Maple Grove/CL key players (and statistics): Sr. RB/CB Ryan Miller, 5-11, 190 (207-2168, 32 TDs); Jr. QB Michael Welsh, 5-7, 135 (18-27-204, 2 TDs); Sr. LB/QB A.J. Hulton, 5-11, 210 (117 tackles, 27 TFL, 5.0 sacks, 49-311 rushing, 3 TDs); So. LB Trevor Micek, 5-10, 170 (111 tackles, 29 TFL); Sr. LB/OL Chandler Baker, 6-2, 240 (85 tackles, 28 TFL, 6.0 sacks).
How they got here: The Thunder Dragons rolled over Section V champion LeRoy, 32-0, as Ryan Miller rushed for 208 yards and scored four touchdowns, including a 46-yard run during the third quarter to give MG/CL an 18-0 lead. Forks crushed Section III champion Utica Notre Dame, 57-14, using a superior running attack led by quarterback Jack Sherwood and running backs L.J. Watson and Ryan Bronson to reach this game once again.
Pre-snap read: This should be quite the interesting semifinal. Running and stopping the run sound cliche as a winning formula, but MG/CL proved it works last week. The winner of this game will likely prove it once again since both teams play a similar power-run style. This contest may come down to will power as well as interior line power in deciding who gets to play for the state title next weekend at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
MG/CL’s Miller, a Connolly Cup finalist, averaged 9 yards a carry in last week’s Far West Regional win over LeRoy and is still averaging an eye-popping 10.5 yards per carry on the season. He is the Thunder Dragons’ main playmaker but as they showed last week, not the only one. Mitch Sandberg took one to the house on a 43-yard run as MG/CL rushed for all 371 of its yards last week, while holding LeRoy to just 95. Jonah Tanner returned a kickoff 87 yards to set up a short touchdown. He’s also one of many forces on an MG/CL defense that has only allowed 44 points and has six shutouts.
Still, Forks knows how to win, bringing a 21-game winning streak into the contest. (website editor note: Huh?). The Blue Devils scored on six of their first seven possessions last week. They also trust Sherwood to throw to his receiving corps, so the Blue Devils may try to loosen up the Dragons’ defense with the pass. Still, Sherwood did score on runs of 18, 69 and 33 yards against Notre Dame. MG/CL did disguise some blitzes and mixed up its coverage in its regional win when LeRoy tried to pass, but its primary focus was stopping the run and letting everything else fall into place.

Hard to find flaws in Blue Devils' semifinal effortROCHESTER – In the wake of Saturday's 27-0 win over Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake, Chenango Forks coach David Hogan was asked what negatives might be revealed during film study.
"Oh, you know us, we'll find things," he replied.
Microscope and fine-tooth comb might have been necessary to detect much beyond minute flaws from this one, a two-way effort as imposing as it was unexpected by most given the credentials brought in by Section 6's champion.
The victory sent Forks' 11-1 reigning champions into Saturday's Class C title game against 12-0 Section 2 champion Hoosick Falls in the Carrier Dome.
Forks' first shutout of the football season was posted against an opponent that brought a 39.9-point scoring average into the contest, and which had allowed no opponent to reach a two-digit scoring total since surrendering 12 in Week 1.
Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake's Ryan Miller (5-11, 190) was coming off a 208-yard rushing day in the quarterfinal, that elevating his season total to 2,163. Miller gained 103 yards against Forks, but did not exceed 10 yards on any of his 28 carries.
"They're going to get their runs, they have great athletes," said Blue Devils linebacker Hunter Luybli, who intercepted two passes. Last time he'd picked one off before Saturday was sophomore season against Skaneateles.
"But we're not going to let it get to us, ever. We're going to come back and we're going to shut them down — like we did at the 1-yard line. We're always going to be coming right back at them. Short memory."
That stop at the 1 came on MG/CL's final offensive play, seeking to avert the shutout. Instead, Luybli popped the ball carrier to create a fumble, leaving Forks two snaps to run out the clock.
"Everybody did their jobs, we played as a team," L.J. Watson said of the defense.
The Blue Devils' offense held up its end, with aid of a couple short fields gift-wrapped by defensive contributions.
"Their defense was very, very good. They've got a lot of team speed, tough kids — obviously we must have blocked some people up front, too," coach Hogan said.
